Art That Moves With You

BEYOND THE FRAME

Project Overview

Beyond the Frame is my senior project in the Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts Major (ICAM) at UC San Diego.

As someone who has always been passionate about graphic design, I wanted to explore how art can connect with people in new and unexpected ways.

Posters have traditionally been static, offering just one moment or message. With Beyond the Frame, I wanted to break that boundary by using augmented reality to create an experience that invites interaction and discovery.

About the Project

Beyond the Frame grew from my passion for graphic design and my excitement to explore new creative directions. With this project, I wanted to see how augmented reality could expand what design can do and open up new ways for people to experience art.  It became an opportunity to experiment and bring together creativity and innovation in a way that pushes the boundaries of visual design.

Early Experimentation

This project began with my first attempt at combining digital art with AR. Using p5.js and Artivive, I created The Algorithm of Light, a poster that experimented with code, animation, and interaction.

This phase gave me a space to play, learn, and understand the potential of combining art and technology. It also helped me see where the work could evolve, and how I could push the experience beyond the first layer of interaction.

Expanding the Experience

After reflecting on my first attempt, I wanted to move beyond technical exploration and create something more intentional and emotionally engaging. In my progress, I focused on expanding Artivive, the AR platform I worked with, by adding sound, building layered 3D visuals, and refining both the conceptual meaning and the overall look of the design.

This shift was about deepening the connection between the viewer and the work. My goal was to move past surface-level visuals and create moments that feel personal, thoughtful, and worth returning to.

Meaning Behind this Project

Beyond the Frame began with a simple question: what happens when we look at something familiar from a different perspective? At first, I was just experimenting. But as the project grew, so did the meaning behind it.

Working with AR wasn’t just a technical choice. It felt like a natural step in today’s world, where technology and art constantly shape each other. I wanted to explore how this new medium could elevate visual storytelling and open up more space for creativity, imagination, and connection.

From One Landmark to Another

  • "Magic Geisel" explores imagination and creativity. It reimagines the library as more than just a study space, encouraging us that we already hold the ability to create, reimagine, and bring new ideas to life.

  • "Sun God Meme" captures the feeling of being overwhelmed during finals. It uses humor to reflect the exhaustion that many students experience, while also recognizing the strength it takes to keep showing up.

  • "Triton Makes Wave" reflects the quiet pressure that comes with graduating. This piece encourages us to find our own current, to move at a pace that feels right, and to trust that even slow, steady movement has meaning. The ocean doesn’t rush, and it still shapes the world.

Together, these posters are my way of looking back on the places that became meaningful to me during my time here. They reflect more than just the physical campus. They carry the emotions, challenges, and small moments that make up the student experience. This project became a space for me to reflect and to create something others might connect with in their own way.
